The Society is managed by volunteer Trustees and a Breed Secretary, who, on a part-time basis, delivers all operational activities, including breed registration and administration, member communication and sales.
The Society is a registered charity, and the charitable purposes are to:
- educate the public generally and farmers in particular regarding breeding, feeding, welfare, quality and purity of Galloway cattle, and to demonstrate their environmental qualities and the benefits they bring to agriculture and conservation.
- promote scientific, empirical and practical research into the breeding, feeding and welfare of Galloway cattle and to use the results to encourage and support best practice.
- promote excellence in Galloway cattle, and to advance education through annual and other shows and educational visits and awards.
The Society comprises of:
- Members - who have the right to attend the AGM and elect people to serve as Trustees.
- Trustees - who set the strategy and policy of the Society, and monitor its financial position.
Annual Show & Sale
The Castle Douglas Show and Sale takes place at Wallets Mart, opposite the Society office, in mid-February each year. The event is a real highlight of the breed attracting buyers and Galloway enthusiasts from across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. Schedules and entry forms are available from early December with entries closing in early January, with the catalogue available shortly thereafter.
Galloway Journal
The Society publishes the Galloway Journal in late January. This A5 publication is posted to all our members and is available for the wider farming community to collect at shows, sales and events. If you would like a copy of our current Journal, please contact us.
