Galloway cattle are an ideal cross-breeding foundation, with first crosses demonstrating strong hybrid vigour that enhances the strengths of both parent breeds. When crossed with any continental bull, the Galloway female produces replacement suckler cows with all the attribute of her dam, including excellent mothering abilities, milkiness and hardiness.
Bluegreys
An increasingly popular cross of the hardy Galloway cow with the Whitebred Shorthorn bull. Bluegreys date back to the mid-19th century, and the cross gained popularity throughout the 20th century thanks to the Bluegrey female’s exceptional maternal abilities and the male’s reputation for producing high-quality beef.
This resilient hill cow is experiencing a resurgence due to its low maintenance requirements, ability to thrive in extreme weather conditions, and on poor grasslands. Bluegrey cattle can be crossed with any sire to produce an excellent, easily fleshed beef calf.
Many breeders sell their Blue-grey cattle at the famous Newcastleton sale, which is now held at Lockerbie Mart. Both female and male animals from this sale travel across the UK, continuing the breed’s legacy in diverse regions.
Galloway x Saler
Strong growth and milkiness are the traits favoured by farmers crossing these two ancient breeds. When crossed with the Galloway, a Saler can enhance easy calving traits while adding growth, making this cross particularly popular for suckler cows.
