Carlisle Spring Show and Sale – Harrison and Hetherington

A lifetime of Galloway breeding ended on a high for Galloway Society’s Honorary Patron Mr Graham Noble, West Acres, Kirklinton - formally Demesne when he received female champion and top price with his last two animals at the Society’s show and sale held at Harrison and Hetherington’s Carlisle Mart.

It was a fitting end to 70 years of owning Galloways,  first at Demesne and then in his retirement at West Acres for Graham, when West Acres Chimera a 23 month old bulling heifer received female champion and was sold to the judges Malcolm Telfer and Helen Claxton for 2200gns  and the 10 month old,  West Acres Big Mac was knocked down for 3000gns to Messrs McMorran, Miefield, Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire.  These two are full brother and sister by the AI sire Grange Mozart and out of Barlaes Brownie 231st  a heifer Graham purchased to continue his interest in the breed.

The overall male champion – Osman of Balgray  was from husband and wife team David and Rosemarie  Cornthwaite, Balgray,  this July 2018 born Troloss Impeccable son is out of Penninghame Uzma and was unsold on the day.  The reserve male champion was Wareham’s Welling from J & S Wareham, Little Tottinghworth Farm, Broad Oak, Heathfield, this 23 month old  is a son of  Welling of Kilnstown who was interbreed champion at Heathfield show, champion at Great Yorkshire show and reserve male champion at Royal Highland show in 2019. 

The reserve female champion Barlaes Robina 46th  was from Robert McTurk, Barlaes, Dalry, this 20 month old heifer is by Watchman of Kilnstown  and out of Barlaes Robina 25th   and sold  to Mr A Carlin, 14 Main Street, Mountfield, Omagh for 2500gns.  Robert  sold another heifer Barlaes Brownie 250th for 1600gns,  she is out of Barlaes Brownie 214th and again sired by Watchman of Kilnstown, this very stylish 21 month old sold to Mr D Henry, Gruige Farm, 4 Gruige Lane, Cloughmills, Ballymena.

Also at 1600gns was the 1st prize in calf heifer Newhouse Lucy 3rd from N & BM Ireland. This June 2017 born heifer was sired by Top of Kilnstown and out of Barlaes Grace 82nd. She has been running with a Whitebred Shorthorn bull and sold to Messrs Weir from Borrowdale, Keswick.

The only cow with calf at foot entry sold for 1600gns, this was Sarah Priestley’s Ben Lomond Yoseba who sold with the Ben Lomand Mhordhu sired heifer calf at foot Brontemoor Rihanna.
