Galloway Cattle Society of GB and Ireland – Castle Douglas Spring Show and Sale

 

 

Galloway cattle  were in demand at the recent sale held at Wallets’ Marts, Castle Douglas as  purchasers came from the length and breadth of the UK and a strong contingent of buyers  from Ireland and Germany meant that nearly a third of the cattle sold headed overseas.

The top price  of 15000gns was for the male champion and the newly awarded overall champion prize which was kindly sponsored by Mr Stuart Brown, Browhaze  was Troloss Matrix from Troloss Farms, Elvanfoot, Biggar expertly brought out by stockman Joe Cockburn and his team,  this stylish May 2017 born bull by the prolific Blackcraig Dec and out of Troloss Gypsy who bred the 2016 Royal Highland Show Female Champion Troloss Jackie  is off home with Richard and Alison Maxwell, Howside, Ennerdale, Cleator.    Troloss Farms had a great day they also sold Troloss Maverick for 3200gns,   this 23 month old bull  is  by  a different sire Hallmark of Upper Buckna but out of the   same dam lines as the 15000gns bull, as the dam is Troloss Jackie, he is off home with Clive Groves, Higher Farm, Sutton Mallet, Bridgewater, Somerset. Another Blackcraig Dec son  Troloss Matador who is a full brother to the 2018 sale female champion Carley 1st of Troloss  sold for 2500gns,  this May 2017 born bull is out  of Highland Queen 14th of Nether Rusko one of the original cows purchased to establish the Troloss herd and is off home with Mr M McCart, Glenquicken Creetown, Newton Stewart. 

The next top price was 8000gns for Ben Lomond Blackthorn from the Maxwell Family, John, Margaret and Duncan and their Ben Lomond herd at Rowardennan at Drymen, Glasgow,  their 22 month old bull is by locally bred Carslae Eddie and out of Ben Lomond Peaches, he was purchased by Lockerbie based breeders David and Rosemarie Cornthwaite, Balgray for their 50 cow herd.

The Ben Lomond herd then went on to purchase Zonda of Kilnstown from Kilnstown Farms Ltd, Bewcastle, Carlisle, Cumbria for 4000gns, this September 2017 born bull was Senior Champion at the show earlier in the day, he is  by Kirkstead Taurus who was Champion bull at the sale in 2013and out of Bridget 14th of Kilnstown. 

Kilnstown Farms also sold Zoro of Kilnstown for 2800gns, this 10 month old bull is by their new stock sire Buccleuch Adonis and out of Rambler Rose 739 of Castlefairn and is one of the 9 animals off to Germany.

The Blackcraig  Team of Society Chairman John, Anne and son Iain, Blackcraig, Corsock,  enjoyed a super day in the show ring and sale ring,  their bull Blackcraig Zodiac born in  August 2017 by the homebred sire Blackcraig Vindicator sold to Klondyke Farms Ltd, Shancastle, Moniaive, Thornhill for 3000gns and in the female classes they secured the female champion and top price with Blackcraig Noreen Y694, again by Blackcraig Vindicator and out of Blackcraig Noreen R334.This stylish heifer is by Blackcraig Noreen R334 sold in calf to new stock sire Ufus Vom Bechtelsberg to returning purchasers Derek and Kate Cowie,  Polston Farm, The Mill, Polston, Invercrynock.  The couple also purchased Blackcraig Bertha Y733  for 2800gns and Blackcraig Noreen Y705 for 2500gns again sold  running with the German bull, these two stylish heifers are  by Blackcraig Vagrant and Blackcraig Vagabond respectively.  The family also secured the very impressive trophy the DR William Heughan Memorial Trophy, this award is for the best Group of three heifers  with the female champion Blackcraig Noreen Y694, Blackcraig Noreen Y705 and Blackcraig Dusy Y719 a Blackcraig Vagabond daughter who sold to new members D  & M Henrey, 8 Gruige Lane, Cloughmills Ballymena for 1950gns.

In the female classes, the Troloss team was also successful securing the reserve female with Beatrix 2nd of Troloss, again by Blackcraig Dec and out of Troloss Beatrix, she sold in calf to Yorker of Romesbeoch to Messrs Evans, Dale Cottage Farm, Wessington Lane, Wessington for 2200gns.  Also at that price was the youngest beast in the sale ring, Debbie 1st of Troloss, this stylish heifer is by Yorker of Romesbeoch and was purchased by German breeder U & O Hasenbein.  

The McCornick Family, Barquhill, Newton Stewart also had a successful day as they received the championship rosettes in the unled pairs and single sections,  their champion in single class was Barquhill Bertha L895 this November 2016 heifer is by the home bred bull Barquhill Barney, who received the  junior championship award at the 2015 Royal Highland Show and out of Barquhill Bertha F670.   This stylish heifer sold to M/s Evans, Dale Cottage Farm, Wessington Lane, Wessington for 1600gns.  In the pairs class it was Barquhill Foxglove L876 and Blondchen L881 who clinched the red ticket, these October 2016 born heifers are by Barquhill Dominator and Barquhill Barney went home with Mr H Smith, Wylie Syke  for 1250gns and   Mr Langdon, Cripton Farm, Sandford, Spiney for 1000gns.

The Young Handlers competition was won by Hayden McEleavey Ross, Romesbeoch,  this was hotly contested by four young members, who are the future of the Society.
