Judge: Mr J Teare, Ballavair, Bride, Isle of Man
A grey start to the Yorkshire show meant that the umbrellas were needed before the end of judging, but this did not dampen the celebrations for Jason and Sarah Wareham, Little Tottingworth Farm, Broadoak, Heathfield, East Sussex as they clinched their first overall champion award at this popular three day show with Welling of Kilnstown. This four year old bull, bred by Andrew Waugh, Kilnstown is by Coldplay of Fingland and out of Marina 67th of Kilnstown and is the senior stock bull for the couple’s 15 cow pedigree herd, he is already a champion having been reserve male at this year’s Royal Highland show and interbreed champion at the Wareham’s local show Heathfield.
Overall reserve champion and female champion was Moira 1926 of Romesbeoch from Jim and Doug Ross, Romesbeoch, Shawhead, Dumfries, this stylish female is by the German sire Holsten Oder and out of the former show cow Moira 408 of Romesbeoch. Born in 2016, Moira is no stranger to prize winning rosettes as she was reserve female champion at the 2019 Royal Highland show and also reserve heifer calf at Dumfries.
New to the Galloway ring, was well known commercial cattle exhibitors, Miss Sarah Priestly, Cracrop, Kirkcambeck, Brampton who received the reserve female champion and junior championship title with Brontemoor Olive, this 17th month old heifer is by the AI sire Ben Lomond Mhordhu and out of Hazel 156th of Hindhope* one of the three cows which was purchased to established the Brontemoor herd.
Sarah also received the cash prize of £100 for the new exhibitor award kindly donated by David and Debs Heath, Heathersgill, we were also delighted to welcome first time Galloway exhibitors Helen Ryman, Beltie Galloway fame and Dexter Logan/Carolyn Ross (Highland Cattle ) to the show. We hope to see them next year.
Mr John Teare commented “It was a real honour to judge at the Great Yorkshire Show and as always to meet up with members and breeders.
I was particularly impressed with the all-round quality of the heifers, showing growth, length and depth; it’s good to see the Galloway breed progressing alongside other native breeds.”
Congratulation to Jason Wareham taking the Galloway champion and the Ross family for reserve champion”
A massive thank you to the Heath family, as the Yorkshire show would not be the same without the hospitality of David, Debs and Emma Heath, who kindly organise the “Galloway Bar” – a home from home to catch up with old and new friends.
