Ballymena Show and Sale – 4th September 2026

Strong Trade at Ballymena for Joint Galloway Sale

The third annual joint show and sale of Belted, Black, and White Galloways was once again held at Ballymena Mart, with the event kindly hosted by J.A. McClelland & Sons Ltd.

While entries were smaller in number, the standard of cattle forward was excellent and was met with strong demand from buyers. It was particularly encouraging to see interest from both new and returning customers, with keen competition for the cattle on offer reflected in a substantial increase in sale averages compared with the previous year.

The marked rise in averages, together with the strength of the trade throughout the sale, provided a very positive indication of the continued demand for quality Galloway cattle in Northern Ireland and growing confidence in the breed.

Show Champion & Top Price

Taking the Overall Championship was the impressive young bull Loyalist L1 of Ballyvaddy, bred and exhibited by husband-and-wife team Tom and Kate Madden, Ballyvaddy, Glencloy, Ballymena, Co. Antrim. At just 11 months old, Loyalist L1 is by the Australian AI sire Cross EI Toro SX D13 and out of Gay 2nd of Telcoy, a daughter of the ET-bred Dakota of Upper Buckna. The stylish young bull certainly caught the eye of buyers, with strong interest around the sale ring. He was eventually secured by John and Ann Finlay of Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas, and will make the journey across the Irish Sea to his new home. Selling for an impressive 4,600gns, Loyalist L1 set a new centre record.

Reserve Champion

The Reserve Championship went to the stylish heifer Gruige Dympna, bred and exhibited by Dessy Henry of Gruige Farm, Cloughmills, Ballymena.

Born in 2023, Dympna is sired by Blaze of Kilnstown and out of Kirkstead Nancy E12, a daughter of Kirkstead Vindicator. She came to Ballymena with show-ring credentials, having stood second in her class at the 2026 Ballymoney Show. Dympna attracted plenty of interest around the sale ring before being secured by J. Torrens of Ballymoney for 3,200gns. She was sold in calf to Trolosse Hunor.

Female Top Price

It proved to be an excellent day for Dessy Henry of Gruige Farm, who also claimed the top female price of the day with Gruige Emer, selling for  4,200gns.

Born in 2024, this eye-catching heifer is sired by Troloss Nutter and out of Barlaes Brownie 250th. Emer attracted strong interest before being secured by Mr J. Torrens of Ballymoney, the same purchaser who had earlier bought Reserve Champion Gruige Dympna.

Dessy Henry’s strong run of trade continued when Gruige Eva, another daughter of Troloss Nutter, sold for 3,600gns, once again to J. Torrens of Ballymoney.

Further success followed with Gruige Faye and Gruige Fionnuala, both daughters of Trolosse Hunor, selling to returning buyer Mark Finlay of Ballyeaston for 3000gns and 2600gns respectively.

Returning purchaser Mark Finlay of Ballyeaston continued to invest in quality Galloway genetics, adding the only other bull forward, Armoy Minnesota Viking, to his purchases at 3,800gns. The 18-month-old bull was bred and exhibited by Mr B. Huey of Armoy, Ballymoney, Co. Antrim. Sired by Oisen CP4 of Castlegore and out of Beth G of Castlegore, a daughter of Troloss Knight Rider, Minnesota Viking also brought with him an impressive show-ring record. He had been successfully exhibited at both Ballymoney and Ballymena Shows, securing first and second prizes respectively. His purchase at 3,800gns completed a notable day’s trading for Mark Finlay, who had earlier secured the Trolosse Hunor daughters Gruige Faye and Gruige Fionnuala.

FOUR OF A KIND: GALLOWAY COW GIVES BIRTH TO QUADRUPLETS

General News

A pedigree Galloway cow has started the autumn calving season in remarkable fashion, giving birth to four live, healthy calves – three bulls and a heifer – in what could be a first for the historic breed.

Political of Balgray delivered the naturally conceived quadruplets on 1 September 2026, with all four calves reported to be alive, strong and doing well.

Quadruplet births are exceptionally rare in cattle and, at present, the Galloway Cattle Society is not aware of another recorded case of a pedigree Galloway cow producing four live calves at a single calving.

The Society is now keen to hear from breeders in the UK and overseas who may know of a previous authenticated case.

Political of Balgray is no stranger to the spotlight. Bred in the renowned Balgray herd, she is by Troloss Impeccable, out of Penninghame Union.

She was sold for 6,000gns at the Balgray dispersal sale in October 2025 to Dexter and Carolyn Logan and has since continued to make her mark, including standing second in the cow class at the 2026 Royal Highland Show.

What makes the arrival of the quadruplets even more remarkable is that Political was given just one opportunity with the bull during a 48-hour period and was never seen to return. The sire of all four calves is Kirkstead Fugative, who was kindly loaned to Dexter and Carolyn Logan by his owner, Richard Nixon, last year. She was subsequently halter trained and shown throughout the summer with her heifer calf at foot – with no indication that she was carrying four new lives inside her.

When the time came, Political took it all in her stride, calving outside and completely unassisted, safely delivering three bull calves and a heifer.

Her latest achievement may prove to be her most remarkable yet.

Dorothy Goldie, Secretary of  Galloway Cattle Society said:

“Four live, naturally conceived calves from one Galloway cow is quite extraordinary. We are not aware of another recorded case, but before claiming a breed first we would love to hear from Galloway breeders around the world who may know otherwise.

“Most importantly, Political and all four calves are strong and doing well. The timing makes it even more special as the Galloway Cattle Society celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2027. After almost a century and a half of recording and promoting the breed, it would be remarkable to have a potential breed first on the eve of such an important milestone.”

As preparations build for the Society’s 150th anniversary, the arrival of four healthy calves from a single pedigree cow provides a memorable addition to the Galloway’s long history.

The Society would be delighted to hear from anyone who can provide documented evidence of a previous set of Galloway quadruplets, either in the UK or elsewhere in the world.

2027 Galloway World Congress

General News

2027 World Galloway Congress Invitation and Itinerary Launched

The Galloway Cattle Society is delighted to announce that the official invitation and itinerary for the 2027 World Galloway Congress have now been released, marking an exciting milestone as preparations continue for what will be two very special celebrations.

The 2027 World Galloway Congress will be hosted jointly by the Galloway Cattle Society and the Belted Galloway Cattle Society, bringing together breeders, members and friends of Galloway Family breeds from across the world.

The Congress will take delegates on a memorable journey through Ireland, Scotland and England, offering an opportunity to experience the diversity of Galloway,  Belted Galloway White Galloways and Riggits cattle and meet the breeders and families behind some of the leading herds across all three countries.

Alongside hosting the international Galloway community, 2027 will also mark the 150th Anniversary of the Galloway Cattle Society. Founded in 1877, this important anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate the Society’s history and recognise the generations of breeders and members who have worked to promote, protect and develop the Galloway breed over the past century and a half.

Together, these two celebrations – the World Galloway Congress and the Galloway Cattle Society’s 150th Anniversary – promise to make 2027 a particularly memorable year for the Galloway community.

The Congress programme will showcase the rich heritage of both the Galloway,  Belted Galloway, White Galloway and Riggit breeds, while also highlighting their continuing importance within modern, sustainable livestock farming. Delegates will have the opportunity to visit herds and agricultural businesses, experience the countryside and farming traditions of Ireland, Scotland and England, and, importantly, enjoy time together with fellow breeders from around the world.

The Society is also delighted to welcome Scottish Woodlands Ltd as Gold Sponsor of the 2027 World Galloway Congress.

Scottish Woodlands Ltd is one of the UK’s leading forestry management companies, with a strong presence throughout Scotland and extensive experience in woodland creation, forest management and sustainable land use. Working closely with farmers, landowners and rural businesses, the company has a strong connection with the countryside and those who manage it.

Their commitment to the rural sector and sustainable land management makes Scottish Woodlands Ltd a particularly fitting partner for the Congress. The Galloway Family is extremely grateful for their generous support and looks forward to working with the Scottish Woodlands team as preparations continue.

Galloway, Belted Galloway, White Galloways and Riggit cattle are now established in countries throughout the world, and the World Congress provides an important opportunity for the international community to come together, exchange knowledge and experiences, renew old friendships and create new ones.

With the official invitations and itineraries now available, excitement is building for what promises to be an unforgettable event, travelling through Ireland, Scotland and England, celebrating the worldwide Galloway community and marking 150 years of the Galloway Cattle Society.

The Galloway Cattle Society Belted Galloway Cattle Society and Riggit Cattle Society very much look forward to welcoming delegates from around the world in 2027 and sharing these two very special celebrations together.

Report

Dumfries and Lockerbie  Show – 1st August, 2026

Judge – Mr Alan Nixon, Nunscleugh, Roweltown, Carlisle

The prestigious Championship title at this year’s Dumfries Show was awarded to Kirkstead Lea G11, exhibited by the Ross family of Romesbeoch, Shawhead.

The stylish 46-month-old heifer is sired by Blackcraig Bugsy Malone and out of Kirkstead Lea D14, herself a daughter of the renowned Troloss Impeccable.

Kirkstead Lea G11 was purchased at the Castle Douglas Spring Sale in 2024 for 2,400gns and was shown with her stylish heifer calf, Lea 3001 of Romesbeoch an Ego of Romesbeoch daughter. She is no stranger to success, having claimed the Championship at the 2025 Royal Highland Show, Reserve Championship titles at both the 2026 Royal Highland Show and the Great Yorkshire Show, and, more recently, the coveted Champion of Champions title at Stewartry Show.

The Reserve Championship was awarded to the much-admired bull calf Rogan Cameron, exhibited by Society Vice Chairperson Carolyn Logan and her husband Dexter, of Greenhead, Alva, Stirling. Born on 2 October 2025, Rogan Cameron is a son of the world-record-priced bull Blackcraig Dyker, who was kindly loaned by Ian Campbell. Rogan Cameron was joined by another Blackcraig Dyker son, Rogan Carona, to win the McIlwraith Pairs Trophy.

Looking ahead, 2027 promises to be a landmark year for the Galloway Cattle Society as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, the Society will be delighted to welcome delegates from around the globe for the World Galloway Congress, while Dumfries Show will proudly host the Society’s National Show. Great Yorkshire Show 2026

Shows & Sales
Report

 2026 Great Yorkshire Show

Tuesday 14th July to Friday 17th July 2026

Judge:- Willie McCornick, Newton Stewart

It was a repeat of the success achieved at the 2026 Royal Highland Show as Kirkstead Nancy H1, exhibited by Graham & Gall of the 3G Herd, Stirling, claimed both the Female Championship and the prestigious Overall Breed Championship.

The September 2023-born heifer, sired by Kirkstead Commander and out of Kirkstead Nancy Y23, first secured the Senior Heifer class before progressing to take the Female Championship and, ultimately, the Overall Breed Championship. This was a well-deserved accolade for this promising young female, who has continued to impress in the show ring and improved on her excellent 2025 performance when she stood Reserve Overall Champion at the Royal Highland Show.

Standing Reserve Overall Breed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show was the outstanding cow Kirkstead Lea G11, exhibited by J & S Ross, Romesbeoch, Shawhead, Dumfries, and expertly shown by Doug and Lloyd.

No stranger to success, Kirkstead Lea G11 once again demonstrated her exceptional quality at Harrogate. Shown with her stylish heifer calf at foot, Ego of Romesbeoch, the pair first won the Female in Milk class before going on to secure the Reserve Female Championship and, ultimately, the Reserve Overall Breed Championship.

Born in September 2022, Kirkstead Lea G11 is sired by Blackcraig Bugsy Malone and out of Kirkstead Lea D14, a daughter of the prolific Troloss Impeccable. Having previously claimed the Overall Breed Championship at the Royal Highland Show in 2025, she has continued her outstanding run of form, with her Reserve Overall Breed Championship at the Great Yorkshire show further highlighting her consistency, quality and maternal strength.

Reflecting on the championship line-up, judge Mr Willie McCornick commented:

“Today’s champion was a standout heifer, and I noticed her as soon as she entered the ring. She immediately caught my eye for her quality and presence. In the end, there was very little between the champion and reserve, making it an extremely close decision.

I would like to congratulate everyone who exhibited cattle today. It was a great show, and although it was disappointing that there were not more entries, the quality presented was outstanding.”

In the male championship classes, the Bull born on or after 1st January 2025 produced a strong result for the Kilnstown herd, with Mr A Waugh, Kilnstown, Bewcastle, Carlisle, securing both the first and second places.

Taking first place and the Male Championship was Hilux of Kilnstown, born 15/10/2025 and sired by Fast Track of Kilnstown. A stylish young bull, he impressed with his overall quality, breed character and presence in the ring.

Standing second and awarded Reserve Male Champion was fellow Kilnstown entry Gunner of Kilnstown, born 18/04/2025 and sired by Newton Cracker.

The champion and reserve Junior Female Championship, came from the  heifers born on or after 1st September 2024 class.

Taking first place and securing the Junior Female Championship was Beauty 2910 of Romesbeoch, exhibited by MJ Ross and sired by Troloss Legend.

Standing second and awarded Reserve Junior Female Champion was May 27th of Kilnstown, exhibited by Alice Pittman, Nunnscleugh, Roweltown, Carlisle. Sired by Buccleuch Discovery and bred by Kilnstown Farms Ltd, she was purchased by Alice at the February Castle Douglas sale for 3,000gns to  establish her new Roadhead herd.

A special mention must also go to all exhibitors who supported the team competition and People’s Choice competition. Their commitment and effort in preparing and presenting cattle, particularly in the challenging heat throughout the week, was greatly appreciated.

The People’s Choice competition added an enjoyable element to the event and provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the breed to a wider audience, allowing visitors to engage with the cattle and have their say in selecting their favourite. Congratulations to everyone who took part and helped make both competitions a success.

Congratulations also to Andrew Waugh, who was the worthy recipient of the New Exhibitor Award, kindly presented by Debs and David Heath.

It was particularly encouraging to welcome three new exhibitors to the Galloway section this year, and we hope their involvement, along with continued support from existing exhibitors, will help build entries in the future. Increasing participation will be important to ensure the Galloway section continues to have a strong presence at the show in the years ahead.

Finally, a huge thank you must go to David and Debs Heath for their wonderful hospitality throughout the week. Their warm welcome, generosity and continued support are greatly appreciated and help make the Galloway Bar such a welcoming and enjoyable part of the show.

Congratulations once again to all exhibitors and prize winners. Your support and dedication continue to showcase everything that is great about the Galloway breed.

The Royal Highland Show once again provided an outstanding showcase for the Galloway breed shown on Thursday, 18 June 2026, with a strong line-up of cattle presented before judge John Tullie.

Commenting on the day’s judging, Mr Tullie said: “I would like to congratulate all the exhibitors. Although the entry was small in number, the quality throughout was exceptionally high, and the Overall Champion was an outstanding exhibit.”

Claiming both the Overall Breed Championship and Female Championship was Kirkstead Nancy H1, exhibited by Graham & Gall of the 3G Herd based at Stirling.   The September 2023-born heifer, by Kirkstead Commander and out of Kirkstead Nancy Y23, first secured the Senior Heifer class before progressing to take the Female Championship and ultimately the Overall Breed Championship. It was a well-deserved accolade for the promising young heifer, who improved on her impressive 2025 performance when she stood Reserve Overall Champion.

Standing Reserve Overall Breed Champion was the outstanding cow Kirkstead Lea G11, exhibited by J & S Ross, Romesbeoch, Shawhead, Dumfries and was ably shown by Doug and Lloyd.   No stranger to success at Ingliston, Kirkstead Lea G11 claimed the Overall Breed Championship in 2025. This year, shown with her heifer calf at foot by Ego of Romesbeoch, the pair won the Female in Milk class before going on to secure the Reserve Female Championship and Reserve Overall Breed Championship.  Born in September 2022, she is sired by Blackcraig Bugsy Malone and out of Kirkstead Lea D14, a daughter of the prolific Troloss Impeccable.

The Male Championship was awarded to Newton Cracker, exhibited by James Campbell. Born in July 2021, Cracker is by Avenger of Kilnstown and out of Parkend Madaleen. He was purchased from Andrew Waugh, Kilnstown, at the 2025 Castle Douglas Spring Sale for 3,500gns. Having been awarded Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2025, he returned this year to go one step further and claim the Male Championship.

Another exhibitor to build on previous success was David and Lynn Watret of the Criffelview Herd, Muirfield, Lockerbie. Their home-bred heifer, Criffelview Rosie, was awarded the Junior Championship. The stylish 21-month-old heifer is by Nucamp of Balgray and out of Blackcraig Rose D1299. The Watrets also enjoyed success at the 2025 Royal Highland Show, when Kirkstead Quirk was named Reserve Junior Champion, making this year’s Junior Championship another notable achievement for the herd.

New Exhibitor Award

Congratulations are extended to Alice Pittman, Nunnscleugh, Roweltown, Carlisle, who received this year’s New Exhibitor Award, kindly sponsored by David and Debs Heath.

The award recognises first-time exhibitors at the Royal Highland Show and celebrates those taking their first steps into showing Galloway cattle. Alice established her new Roadhead Herd after purchasing a  lovely heifer from Andrew Waugh, Kilnstown, at the Castle Douglas Spring Sale. We hope this marks the beginning of many successful years in the show ring and wish Alice every success with her new herd.

As in previous years, the Galloway Cattle Society was delighted to host its exhibition stand throughout the Royal Highland Show, providing an excellent platform to promote the breed while welcoming members, prospective breeders and visitors over the four-day event.

A sincere thank you is extended to everyone who gave their time to help on the stand, provided the much-appreciated home baking and refreshments, and joined us for the traditional after-show drinks reception. Your enthusiasm, generosity and support helped create a warm and welcoming focal point throughout the show, and your contribution is sincerely appreciated.
