STEWARTRY SHOW – Saturday 27th July, 2024. JUDGE – Caroline McMillan, Ayrshire.
The Stewartry Show, now held on a Saturday, enjoyed a warm and sunny day that was perfect for both exhibitors and public. Once again, the Ross Family from Romesbeoch, Shawhead, Dumfries, clinched the Galloway Champion title with their outstanding entry, Kirkstead Lea G11. This September 2022 born, is a daughter of Blackcraig Bugsy Malone who was purchased in 2021 for 7000gns and out of Kirkstead Lea D14 who is a Troloss Impeccable daughter. The family purchased Kirkstead Lea G11 bred by RA McClymont, Kirkstead, Yarrow, Selkirk at this year’s Castle Douglas Spring show and sale for 2400gns. Kirkstead Lea G11 has had a successful show season, being crowned the Breed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show and earning the Reserve Champion title at the Royal Highland Show.
The reserve champion was Foxglove Eyebright of Nether Cleugh owned by Peter Hunter Blair, Nether Cleugh, Dalry, Castle Douglas and shown by daughter Natasha Hunter Blair. She is sired by Nucamp of Balgray and is out of Foxglove Xaviera of Nether Cleugh, a daughter of the renowned Ladywells Notable 242N (Canada). The heifer has already made a name for herself in the show ring. Prior to her success at the Stewartry Show, she was named Reserve Junior Champion at the Royal Highland Show.
The best bull calf was from new exhibitor Will McCarthy, Cosy Cottage, Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire, this September 23 born is by Blackcraig Drambuie and is destined for the Castle Douglas sale in spring 2025. Will also received the trophy for best opposite sex to the champion, this April 23 born bull by Warhorse of Finland was bought as a calf at the 2024 sale at Castle Douglas in February. He will be used at home with cows this winter.

H&H Autumn Show 2024
Galloway cattle were in high demand at the Autumn Sale at Carlisle Mart, the flagship venue of Harrison and Hetherington. The event was marked by a sense of optimism, with five new purchasers making their debut in the breed, signalling continued interest and confidence in Galloways.
Ayr Show 2024
James and John Graham, Burnbank, Blair Drummond, Stirling and Dennis Gall, Lockerbie clinched the any other native breed Championship with Blackcraig Noreen D1321, this Nucamp of Balgray sired entry was bought in February at Castle Douglas for 3800gns, she is out of Blackcraig Noreen V530 and was paraded in calf.
