Judge Sam Smyth with John Heard

Okehampton Show – Thursday 15th August 2024. Judge:- Mr Sam Smythe, Woolhanger Estate, Exmoor.

Okehampton show is always one of the best shows for stock numbers and once again there were some good cattle on show in all the breeds. The weather did not play ball as the showery spells persisted all day.

The Galloways were once again shown in the pens and the judge this year was Mr Sam Smythe who is the farm manager at Woolhanger Estate on Exmoor. There were two senior bulls forward and the judge gave the nod to Crossdykes Elgin shown by John Heard and family. This 3 year old bull is in his second season for the Heards and is turning into a nice bull. Miles Partridges’  Craigmuie Queensbury was in 2nd place and this is also a big stretchy bull.

In the incalf cow class the judge placed the Heard’s family - Fowley Glengoyne Beauty 1st shown with her spring born bull calf at foot. This was the first outing for this stretchy young cow. Once again Miles Partridge’s Rowtor Lucy stood in second. In the cow & calf class Fowley Jetstream Sally with her spring born bull calf was placed 1st.  This again was a big stretchy cow and had a nice calf at foot by Crossdykes Elgin and she then went on to be placed overall champion with the bull in reserve.

With no heifers forward numbers were slightly down but thanks go to all the exhibitors for turning out on a very wet day and also many thanks to the judge.

The forecast had predicted rain, and it was certainly accurate. From the early hours of the morning, the heavens opened, leading to a persistent downpour that lasted throughout the judging on the first day of the popular Great Yorkshire show. Both exhibitors and animals were subjected to the relentless rain, resulting in everyone getting thoroughly soaked.

In less than favourable conditions, it was Kirkstead Lea G11 from Jim & Selina Ross, son Doug and grandson Lloyd, Romesbeoch, Shawhead, which shone through to receive the championship and junior  awards, this September 2022 born, is a daughter of Blackcraig Bugsy Malone who was purchased in 2021 for 7000gns and out of Kirkstead Lea D14 who is a Troloss Impeccable daughter. The family purchased Kirkstead Lea G11 bred by RA McClymont, Kirkstead, Yarrow, Selkirk at this year’s Castle Douglas Spring show and sale for 2400gns and on her only previous outing,  she was reserve champion at this year’s Royal Highland Show.

Romesbeoch also received the male championship award with Gage of Romesbeoch, this September 2023 born bull is by Strathurr Yogi  and out of Twinkle 1589 of Romesbeoch, a Turbo Tam of Nether Cleugh daughter. The family also took the reserve male award with Gladiator of Romesbeoch this junior bull who also  received the junior reserve rosette is by the homebred Ego of Romesbeoch and out of Nerys 2175 of Romesbeoch.

Blackcraig Blondchen Z850 secured the reserve overall champion title for John, Ann, and son, Iain Finlay of Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas. This 7 year old cow which has been recently flushed with embryos from her having been sold to Australia,   is sired by Blackcraig Xtream and out of Blackcraig Blondchen W554.    Her daughter Blondchen D1314 had been champion at the Royal Highland show the month before.

In the pairs competition, new members David and Lynn Watret from Muirfield, Lockerbie, emerged victorious. Their exceptional pair of stylish heifers not only took the championship award but also secured an entry into the new interbreed pairs competition. The winning pair consisted of Blackcraig Rose D1299,  a daughter of Barlaes Rivellion and  out of Rose 29th of Auchenhay and Countess Delilah of Nether Cleugh, sired by Blackcraig Ynot and out of Countess Winnie of Nether Cleugh.

This year the Breed was able to compete in the interbreed teams competitions which resulted in a tremendous result as Gage of Romesbeoch, Kirkstead Lea G11, Blackcraig Blondchen Z850 & D1314 received fourth place. Well done to all.

Once again Jason and Sarah Wareham, Tottingworth Farms Ltd, East Sussex traveled the long journey north to show their Galloways and  Belties. Once again they were flying the Galloway flag in the commercial classes where their     Galloway cross heifer - Star Bar, this  home bred was first in her class.  This followed on from last year’s successes and  native champion at the 2024 Royal Highland Show.

The Society would like to give thanks to David and Debs Heath for hosting the Galloway Bar, along with their daughter Emma, they  extends a very warm welcome to everyone at the show and ensure one and all have  a great time.

Overall, the weather was far from ideal and we thank the exhibitors for their   dedication and perseverance to continue to show their animals in horrible conditions.
